Is it possible to get clients online given the following situations?
- You don’t have money for advertising
- You don’t have an email list
- You don’t have any followers on social media
The answer is YES! The secret is through Conversations.
How? Keep reading because, in this post, I will be talking about how to get clients without paying for marketing.

Start Looking for Conversations
Once you start looking for conversations, you will find more opportunities to have them.
Even if you are just starting and feel like there aren’t any people in your network that you could talk to about your business or your service, keep looking for one.
These are NOT Sales Conversations
Don’t be a friend who’s trying to sell anything to all his friends.
Start to have more meaningful conversations. Something that is interesting and helpful to other people.
Realize that You are not Talking to a Potential Client
Keep in mind that there are two people you are talking to:
- Potential clients
- Referrals
If the person that you are talking to isn’t a good client for you or a potential client, then they might still know someone who would be interested in what it is that you are offering.
Step 1: Are you talking to a Potential Client or a Referral?
In every conversation that you will have, be clear if you are talking to a potential client or if you are talking to a referral.
Understanding where the conversation is going is the key. Every conversation can bring you closer to a new client so knowing where your conversation will be heading is crucial.
There are two possible scenarios for this:
- If they are potential clients, offer exactly what they need.
- If they are not good clients, ask them if they know anyone who would be interested in your services.
By doing the first step right, no conversation will be a waste of time.
Step 2: Don’t be a Salesman Friend
Again, this is NOT a Sales Conversation.
Your goal in having a conversation is to help the other person you are talking to and not to annoy them.
You can still ask anything once the conversation goes well. But avoid contacting people within your network asking where to get clients.
Engage in a conversation where you can help them with what they need.
Step 3: Ask Great Questions
Instead of selling, ask great questions.
Asking questions can make or break the whole conversation so make sure to ask great questions.
Great questions are:
- Questions that are interesting to another person
- Questions that will make them open up to you
- Questions that will make them share their struggles, dreams, etc with you
Once the other person feels comfortable and started sharing with you, that’s a sign that you are asking great questions.
Step 4: Go with the Flow of Conversation
This may sound easy but really tricky one, go with the flow.
Don’t try to push the conversation in a certain way that goes according to your plan, but go with where it’s flowing naturally.
By doing this step correctly, other people will be happy that you’ve reached out to them and they will enjoy having a conversation with you.
Step 5: Get Permission to Talk About Your Service
Once you already set the mood of your conversation, that’s the time to think about your services.
When they start to express interest in you by asking questions about what you do, that’s when you have permission to talk about your things and potentially make them an offer to start working with you.
Step 6: Ask if They Need Your Help
And this is the time to ask big questions to get clients.
For example, you are a Web Designer and looking for clients who want a website created. You can consider asking the following questions:
- Do you need a website?
- Is this something I could do for you?
If they say yes, that’s a good client for you.
If they say no, follow up with these questions:
- Do you know somebody who needs a web designer right now?
- Is there someone who you could introduce me to?
And whoever they refer you to, restart the entire process. All the steps from one to six, as I have discussed.
Start having meaningful conversations online through Facebook Group or other social media platforms. And one excellent way is to publish content online. These are usually great conversation starters, especially if you will be creating helpful content.

Excellent guide here Morris. Letting go agendas is the uncomfortable but powerful step which indirectly builds business through the miracle of detachment. Let go need of money and the money arrives far more quickly than you expect. The key is to express fears fueling agenda-driven marketing to fully invest in the process of helping people generously.
‘The miracle of detachment’ I need to write this down on a card because that’s EXACTLY what it boils down to. Anyone who’s tried selling in-person or over the phone knows exactly what it feels like when ‘trying too hard’ (which is the opposite of how we want to feel about the process). Thank you for sharing your wisdom, Ryan! I appreciate you and your blogging experience.
