Why Most Coaches FAIL At Marketing

Most solopreneurs feel guilty because they know they don’t do enough marketing. But you only need to do two things to succeed in marketing, which I’ll show you in this article.

I’ll also show you what successful solopreneurs are doing in their marketing, and I’ll try to give actionable advice for each step.

So what are these things that you should be doing every day?

  1. Outreach
  2. Creating content

I haven’t met anyone yet who does these two things every day and isn’t succeeding in their marketing so let’s start with the first one, daily outreach.

Daily Outreach

And no this is not spamming people in the DMs on social media. Sure, it is ONE strategy but in my experience, most people are not comfortable doing that and you don’t have to do that.

The most important thing you have to understand about outreach is that you are not pitching.

If you’re pitching to random people and strangers online every day, don’t do it. Outreach is as simple as:

  • Saying hello
  • Sending somebody a helpful resource you’ve come across
  • Even just checking in with them and asking them how they’re doing, how their health is doing, or how their business is doing

And even if you’ve been struggling in your marketing in recent times, it is very likely that you already have dozens of people, maybe even over a hundred people in your network, people that you can reach out to.

What the really success solopreneurs are doing is:

  1. They have a method for their daily outreach
  2. They have a way of tracking the people that they have connected with or people that they would like to connect with in the future
  3. They also track when they last spoke to them
  4. Then checking this information
  5. Checking this data every single day allows you to easily know which 5, 10 or 20 people you want to reach out to today

Now, if you have no one in your network a very easy step is to:

  1. Go to social media
  2. Think about who your ideal prospect is
  3. Search for those keywords
  4. Find people who look like that on their profiles
  5. Start getting in touch with people by liking their content
  6. Don’t pitch anything, just reach out.
  7. Write a comment
  8. Or send a message

You can say hi as long as you’re not being salesy and pushy, and as long as you’re not pitching anything, there is no reason to feel uncomfortable about that.

Yes, it might take some time for you to get used to but that is why it’s a habit. In the first few days, maybe even in the first week, this won’t feel very good or you’re still feeling insecure about it but:

  • If you keep at it
  • If you do this
  • And build this into a daily routine then you’re building this habit
  • You’re going to be doing this without even thinking about it anymore

What’s also really important and what I see the successful solopreneurs do is they don’t just reach out to new people all the time. They also reach out to their existing connections.

If you were a coach, think about all the people that you have spoken to already since you became a coach or even before that and how many of those people haven’t you spoken to in a while.

When you’re building your method, you can also set benchmarks that you decide. Don’t look for benchmarks from outsiders, look for what works for you.

For example:

  1. You can start with five contacts per day
  2. And say every day, “I’m going to reach out to four existing contacts people I haven’t talked to in a while, and one new contact that I’m finding on Facebook”, if Facebook is your favorite platform.
  3. If five people are not enough for you, then do 10 people
  4. If you don’t like Facebook but you prefer LinkedIn, then do it on LinkedIn.

You must build a method that works for you.

If you’re struggling to find out the benchmarks that will work best for you, consider:

  1. Hiring a coach
  2. Work with a marketing and business coach like myself or someone you resonate with
  3. And figure out what works for you

Make your own benchmarks.

I used to spend much time on Twitter doing the following:

  1. Outreach
  2. Connecting with people
  3. Finding clients
  4. Finding amazing collaborations
  5. And meeting awesome people.

From that experience, there is one final tip that I want to give you in terms of outreach for social media specifically.

Before you send somebody a DM on social media, you want to connect with them through their content and their posts. If you send a DM uninvited, most people are suspicious. They’re curious about what your agenda is, and what are your true intentions when you say, “Hey how are you?”

But if somebody posts content and you write a comment, a comment that truly shows that you enjoyed their content. If you don’t enjoy their content, then don’t write a comment.

  1. Find people that you resonate with
  2. Comment on their content
  3. They reply
  4. And you have a conversation
  5. A little back and forth and this goes over days and even weeks
  6. At that point, it is very easy to send a DM and you’d be surprised that you’re probably the one receiving a DM from them first.

If you’re doing it this way, you will be very successful in your outreach on social media and nobody will think of you as a salesy guy who’s just pushy and pitching people.

Content Creation

All right moving on to the second thing that you should do every day to simplify your marketing, that is daily content, posting something every day.

Now that’s another thing, that’s sometimes controversial especially when you feel the pressure of posting every day. I guess a better way to phrase it is to say, “Work on your content every day” and when it’s finished you post it and you share it.

See what’s going to happen when you work on your content every single day, you will get better at creating content. Maybe at the beginning, it takes you several days for one small piece of content and you can only post twice per week and that’s fine.

But if you truly practice this every single day, you will:

  1. Get better
  2. Get faster
  3. Get more efficient with the tools you’re using
  4. Then before you know it, you’re posting four to seven times per week.

But it starts with building this practice of creating content every day and creating content is pretty much the opposite of daily outreach.

By posting content, you become a magnet that’s attracting the right people, that’s bringing people to you as opposed to you chasing after people or reaching out to people.

Speaking from experience, this is the strategy that most people would prefer but in reality, what happens is if all you do is post content without doing the outreach then nobody sees your content.

But when you do both, then you’re creating a synergistic combo that both amplify each other and you get more and better results with the combination of reaching out to people and posting content.

How are the successful solopreneurs doing their content? One very important thing that I see very often is batch creation or batch posting.

What it means is that you have one dedicated day per week where you create and schedule the content for the entire rest of the week. On virtually, all social media platforms, you can schedule your posts ahead of time and so what that means?

  1. You work on your content every day
  2. Create something every day
  3. Then have one dedicated day where you spend all your time on creating content and you post it and schedule it for the rest of the week.

If this is not possible for your schedule, then again, find what works for you.

Create your own benchmarks. If you can’t invest an entire day into creating, posting, and scheduling content, then invest 2 hours, and on the other days, you just take 20 minutes to create more content.

The point is this, by investing this time into your daily practice you are building a new habit and you get so much better at it weeks and months later.

You’re creating content easily and effortlessly that before took you much more time and energy. Now if you’ve never created content, if you’ve never posted on social media, then the first thing you want to ask yourself is which media type do you prefer the most?

  1. Would you be most excited about writing content?
  2. Would you be more excited to create videos?
  3. Would you prefer to create graphics charts and designs?

Consider the following options in choosing the content you will be posting as well as the platform you will be using:

  1. If you like videos, take your phone, make some recordings, and learn to edit with a free software called Capcut.
  2. If you like to write, then start writing and posting.
  3. If you like to create visuals, then start creating designs, charts, and infographics in Canva which is also free.

Pick one media type that you like and you resonate with and then pick one platform that you also resonate with.

  1. If it’s videos then YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok. They are very good platforms.
  2. If you prefer writing, then you have Twitter which is now called X, also Facebook Groups things like that even LinkedIn.
  3. If you prefer to create pictures, designs, and charts in Canva then you can post them on Instagram, Facebook, and to a certain extent also on Twitter X and Linkedin.

Now that you know your preferred media type and your preferred platform, be realistic about your schedule.

How much time can you invest every single day into creating content? Ask yourself do you want to only stick to that daily habit or do you also want to start with batch posting batch creating and scheduling for the rest of the week.

There’s no cookie-cutter answer to this. Everyone has a unique schedule, and different strengths and weaknesses. Find what works for you, what matters is that you are reaching out to people every day, you are creating content every day and you’re combining these two methods.

If you’re struggling to create content, then I have already created a series where I talk about all the different content creation strategies and different types of content you can. Click this article next to start your journey in creating content.

My Three Takeaways

  1. Integrate outreach and content creation into your daily routine to build lasting habits. Although starting these practices may be uncomfortable, persistence leads to ease and automaticity over time. Establishing these habits is crucial for long-term success in marketing.
  2. Find what works best for you in terms of outreach methods, content types, and platforms. Set benchmarks and goals that align with your preferences and schedule, rather than following generic standards. Experiment with different media types and platforms to discover your niche.
  3. Successful marketing involves a synergistic approach, combining outreach with content creation. Engage with others’ content before reaching out directly to build genuine connections.
