If you’re tired of looking for clients, I want to show you 3 things you can do to flip it around, which means potential clients will start reaching out to you.
Currently, about 4 or 5 people reach out to me every week, and that results in 1 or 2 calls per week.
These are really not high numbers but it’s enough to keep the business going and I have learned a lot about how to position myself so people want to contact me.
So first, to answer a question you probably have: Where do these people contact me?
I receive messages:
- Either on my social media posts,
- In private messages,
- Or through email.
I would say social media communication is a weak bond, but private messages and emails are a much stronger bond. So I will always prioritize people who email or DM me.
In one of the guides I created, “How to Get High-Ticket Clients”, I explained how Direct Messages work in getting clients online. I also shared some scripts that you can use. You can access it thru this link, and what’s great about it? It is FREE!
If so far you’re constantly getting rejected or ghosted, then it’s time to change:
- Your communication
- Your positioning
- And your energy.
I looked at an example like Tony Robbins.
And I asked myself: “If Tony were to post a link to his Calendly page for a free coaching session, how long do you think it would take to fill up his calendar completely?”
He would probably be booked out in less than a minute.
Of course, he is an extreme example but there are many things we can learn from someone like Tony Robbins about communication, positioning, and energy.
And we will talk about it in this blog.
For this blog, I promised you 3 things you can do so people start reaching out to you.
- First, people have to see you.
- Second, you have to be helpful.
- And thirdly, it has to be easy to reach out to you.
There is also a fourth bonus step but I’m gonna leave that for the end.
Things to do so People Start Reaching Out to You
First Thing: People have to SEE you.
As I said, people have to see you and ideally, they will see you every day.
How they can see you? They can see you through:
- Social media posts,
- Emails,
- Private messages,
- And even calls
You might ask: “Aren’t people going to be annoyed of me?”
Think about your mailman. Your mailman shows up every day but how you feel about him or her depends on what they deliver.
Are you expecting bills or taxes? You won’t be too happy seeing your mailman.
Are you expecting a gift or a personal letter? You probably can’t wait for your mailman to show up.
That’s how you have to think about your daily interactions.
You are the mailman and you share with them things like:
- Helpful tips
- Useful examples
- Interesting stories,
- And so on.
If you do that, they won’t be annoyed of you, just like they aren’t annoyed of the mailman showing up every day.
Being seen takes a while online.
The best advice I can give you here is:
- To turn it into a daily routine
- Spend at least 20 minutes a day
- Or spend longer if you have the time for it
Remember, if you don’t show up, nobody else is going to show up for you. That’s just the reality of things when you’re starting from scratch.
But if you do it right, here’s what will happen:
- You will meet other people on your social media platform.
- Then you can collaborate.
- You can start to cross-promote each other.
- And that’s when things start to go faster and faster.
Second Thing: You have to be HELPFUL.
Next, you have to make sure you are seen as helpful.
There are plenty of people online who have tons of visibility but they’re known for being entertaining, funny, or controversial.
You wanna be known for being helpful.
And you do that by sharing as many stories and examples of how you’re helping others.
That’s a time where it’s totally worth helping a couple of people for free so you have these stories and examples to share.
I am sure before you even launched your coaching or consulting business, you’ve already helped plenty of people in your life.
For example this week, I’m helping someone overcome his self-criticism when he records himself. He has a wonderful personality but he is completely paralyzed when he records himself.
Here’s the journey we embarked together:
- The day he reached out to me, I asked him if he’d be open to an experiment.
- Then I gave him a couple of tips to help him with his recordings.
- And guess what, for the last week he’s recorded a short video almost every day.
- And through this story, I can demonstrate that I am here to serve and help.
If you want people to see you as helpful, all you have to do is actually help.
The biggest concern I usually hear is: “But then why would they pay me?”
Here’s my take on this…
If you can give away your entire value in a few messages, then I agree with you: There is no reason to hire you.
But for all the coaches, consultants, and freelancers that I’ve helped over the years, having direct access to them, and meeting them 1on1 for a fully focused session, has more value than just sharing the information in a few emails.
So stop worrying about giving away your knowledge for free. Be helpful and generous and more people will reach out to you.
You will make MORE money when you give away more of your knowledge for free.
Third Thing: You MUST be easy to Reach.
The third component is that it must be easy to reach you.
If you have a website, you probably think it’s easy to reach you. Unfortunately, that’s not enough.
Imagine a woman sitting at home on the sofa, after a long day at work. She’s hungry and irritated because she’s trying to skip dinner to lose weight.
You are a weight loss coach who helps women lose weight without feeling hungry and irritated. And this woman follows you on all social media platforms and knows who you are.
Do you think she will now go to your website and book a free consultation with you?
No, that’s never gonna happen.
Here are some things running in her mind:
- All she can think about is how much it sucks to deprive herself of delicious food just to fit into some social norm that she has to be skinny.
- Even though she knows, likes, and trusts you – the last thing she’s gonna think of is you and your weight loss coaching.
But imagine if right at that moment, your email pops up in her inbox. And you share a story of how you gave someone a salad recipe that they could eat in the evening to not feel hungry while also not eating too many calories.
And in that email, you say: “If you’re hungry you’re doing it wrong. Let me help you lose weight without starving yourself. Click here for a free first consultation.”
Do you see the difference?
Now it’s easy to contact you. It’s just one click, right then and there when she needs you the most.
Remember these things:
- It is important to keep showing up
- To be visible
- To demonstrate your skill at helping
- Then making it easy for them to reach out to you
If you pay attention to my messages, that’s exactly what I’m doing too. You might have not noticed it so far because you didn’t need my help. But those who needed my help, they reached out.
These are the 3 core components that you have to work on every day and over time, you will notice how it flips around.
Instead of you chasing after people, potential clients will start reaching out to you.
And that is a wonderful way to sell your coaching, consulting, or services.
Bonus Tip: Share Examples and Stories
As I mentioned earlier, there is a 4th component that I saved for the end. I didn’t really know how to fit it into the other 3 so I wanted to keep it separate.
It’s important that people see others reaching out to you. Even if you tell people that you can help them, very often it doesn’t click for them until they see someone else get your help.
I think this is just how human psychology works. So if you have a process that you want your potential clients to go through, share examples and stories of how someone else went exactly through that process.
For example:
- Linda sent me a DM on Twitter
- After we got talking we scheduled our first Zoom call.
- And now 3 weeks later she’s already got her first client for her coaching program.
This story will click for my potential clients and make them more likely to send me a DM on Twitter.
A story like that is much better than me just saying: “Send me a DM on Twitter.”
What I’ve told you here is incredibly valuable marketing advice and I hope I did a good job breaking it down for you.
